10 reminders surrounding mobility.
10 reminders surrounding mobility.
A lot of people take mobility more serious when they experience a loss of function of some sort (injury, chronic pain, or lifestyle related) - I most certainly am someone who did. The thing to keep in mind is just like any other part of our body and life for that matter - we are responsible to care in the now for our basic essential needs, or else it truly will come up as a problem later in some capacity.
When you reframe it as a human essential it can be easier to grasp the importance, pre experiencing the loss of function. Such as — not brushing your teeth for 6+ months you know will probably yield cavities. Or not showing up to work for 2 weeks will probably result in losing your job. We can understand these things so instinctively we usually avoid doing them.
Now think of sitting at a desk for 6 hours, 5 days a week… now picture your hamstrings and hip flexors, upper traps and neck extensors as those teeth not getting brushed… picture the cumulative effect of the stillness and tightening in that position.
If we are consistently doing what we are not designed to do (aka sedentary and stagnant) and consistently not doing what we need (aka movement)…experiencing consequential tightness, loss of function and injury are an understandable result. Now I’m not saying all chronic pain, injury or sudden change of function is your neglect to mobility - there are so many factors and variables that can be at play and many can be outside your conscious control - however, I am saying that the simpler to see your body’s needs, the easier it is to prioritize them.
Retroactive work costs SO much more in time, emotion and money. (Again trust me, your girl learned the hard way) ..What mobility work you do now can make a great positive impact in your future.
