Blue Light Blockers
Blue Light Blockers
What is the deal with blue light?
Blue light isn't the villain in our light diet - we have natural blue light exposure from the sun everyday. The problems with blue light begin to arise with our very unnatural and high amounts of artificial blue light exposure from our devices, lighting, and in particular this exposure at night time.
Seeing as devices have intertwined themselves in our daily lives, a more realistic solution to this problem is to have blue light blocking strategies rather than throwing your phone into the ocean (although I have thought about this).
There are three options ranging in costs but nevertheless effective when done consistently:
1. Blue light blocking glasses
Although I try to avoid wellness trends like the plague, and these have most certainly become more of a fashion trend than anything - they can have their place your daily strategies on minimizing the amount of blue light entering your eyes.
What color lens?
You'll see glasses that are clear, yellow, orange and red. Here are the basic details on lens color:
- Clear or light tint: These are considered the most minimal at blocking blue light but suggested for day time use. We would naturally get blue light exposure (natural source from the sun not artificial), so wearing these during the day can help with eye strain and fatigue related to screen usage
- Yellow/Orange: These provide more blue light blocking and for some people are the most comfortable or functional to wear in the evenings while using screens whether it is computer or watching TV. This has minimal altering to proprioception and visual field, just adds a warm hue to your visuals.
- Red: This is the most effective at blue light blocking and would be most recommended for night time use. However, as mentioned above, some people just don't enjoy seeing red. Pun intended?! If you can adapt to them, they most certainly work the best.
I personally am using clear during the day and amber at night. I may graduate to red soon, maybe in time to make it festive for the holidays :)
Does cost matter?
You will see some on amazon for 15 dollars and some designer frames in the hundreds.
- The key aspects are that the lens filter blue light, and at the wavelengths that are the most disruptive to our circadian rhythm, which are 400 to 500 nm.
- An anti-glare lens can help reduce eye strain.
- Lastly - material quality, if these are sitting on your face every day is does give some peace of mind to know what it is made of. Surely in this matter, the cheaper you go does run the risk of cheaper materials being used which can come with some costs.
2. Screen Protectors
There are several different options for blue light blocking screen protectors for both your phone and your laptop.
The phone protectors are ones that actually stick to your screen and also function to protect the screen as they do your eyes. However, some people find it alters the ability to edit/see true color of content. Minor compromise for your well-being?
Another FREE option for the option is:
2 a. Changing the screen settings at nighttime.
For the iPhone follow these steps:
> Settings
> Display & Brightness
> Night Shift
>> here set the times ie: 5 pm to 8 am
>>>change the color temperature for that time -- make it as warm as it goes
** Your Mac actually has this same option I just realized a few days ago. The Night shift button at the the right corner of Settings and Display&Brightness
3. Home Lighting Options
There are several companies that now offer smart lighting that you can change based on the time of day.
Here is one non-affiliated company (just one I am looking into for my home). I will post others as I research them.
